Summary of Online Safety Act

file.jpg.png

The Act creates different duties and offences for different types of providers.  This note does not explain which duties apply to which providers or give details of the offences. It is a high level overview which is the first step towards identifying compliance.

When is it law? Some sections are in force already, with other provisions set to become law, when Ofcom has produced guidance, anticipated later in 2024.

Background and purpose:  This law is part of a wider Government strategy to tackle the fast moving digital landscape. It creates a number of responsibilities placed on certain providers of online services.

Regulator: Ofcom
